Dear Parent/Carer,

Following the Deputy First Minister’s statement on Thursday, Angus Council issued a statement on Facebook on 30th July regarding arrangements to be made for the return to school. In order to prepare and support pupils for a full return to school on Monday 17th August, we have decided that pupils should attend on the following days.

Wednesday 12th August – S2 and S3 pupils only

Thursday 13th August – S1 pupils only

Friday 14th August – S1 pupils and S4, S5 and S6 pupils only. College courses will not start until the following week, so all S4-6 pupils should attend Montrose Academy on this date.

Each day will be a full day.

Arrangements for pupils who work with the ASN team will be the same as those issued before the holidays.

S4, S5 and S6 pupils may wish to discuss SQA results or changes to their course choice. Should you wish to do this, please email your Principal Teacher Pupil Care and Support to arrange a meeting. Pupils in S5 and S6 will be welcome to attend school on Wednesday 12th August or Thursday 13th August for the purpose of this meeting or to discuss their SQA results.

Before the holidays, I wrote to you regarding arrangements for school clothing, stating that…

I said in my previous letter that I have asked pupils not to wear uniform, but to wear clothing which would be suitable for PE. Some parents and carers have since been in touch to say that their child would prefer to wear uniform or that it had already been bought. At the moment we do not know if changing rooms will be available or not,and I am reluctant to base a policy on a presumption that they will be open. I am also aware that given the current situation many families will find themselves in a different financial situation to the one they had pre-lockdown and the price of buying a uniform may be prohibitive, particularly if they have already bought suitable clothing based on my last letter. Therefore our stance is that pupils should wear clothes which you, as parents and carers, deem suitable for the first term at least. All S1 pupils, as promised as part of their transition, will be given a school tie free of charge but there is no expectation that these are worn unless this is the choice of the parent and carer. If you are keen that your child wears uniform but you find yourself unable to afford one, please contact your child’s Principal Teacher Pupil Care and Support who will be able to offer advice. Contact details can be found on the Home section of the school website.

At this late stage of the holidays I am very reluctant to change advice on school uniform as many of you will already have bought clothes and there is not much time to buy new clothing. I am awaiting confirmation on access to PE facilities when we return to school and until I am confident that pupils will have access to changing rooms I would ask that if pupils have PE on their timetable, that they wear sports appropriate clothing to school. On other days , I would ask that, where possible, pupils wear school uniform. However, we recognise that this may not be possible for all families during the first term back. Please note that football tops and clothing with logos which may cause offence are not acceptable.

More information on arrangements for the return to school will be posted over the next week or so.

Kind regards
Malcolm Smart
