Head Teacher Message
Mr M. Smart, Montrose Academy's new Head Teacher, discusses the school “Vision”; supporting young people and preparing them for the future and the change of the weekly timetable to a 33 period week.
Pupils have the opportunity to study at least two languages during their time at Montrose Academy. Before starting S1, pupils, with the help of their families, choose to study either French or German from S1-S3. In S3 pupils choose a second language as a Taster, either German or Spanish. Pupils can expect to learn about the language & culture of France, Spain or Germany, and have some authentic experience of the language. This might include working with the Foreign Language Assistant, participating in activities for the European Day of Languages, visiting the Discovery Film Festival or taking part in the cutting edge Business Language Champions project. Languages bring literacy skills, communication and confidence but our Broad General Education is also very skills focused, with S3 pupils working towards the Languages for Life & Work award, completing modules on Building Employability Skills and focusing on how languages enhance employability and transferable skills for work. By the end of the Broad General Education, pupils will have good basic knowledge of their first choice language as well as an awareness of the culture and history of that country. Over and above this they will have a level 4 award to boost their CV and future college or university applications. Having studied their Taster language once a week for a year, they have the choice of two languages at Senior Phase.
Senior Phase (S4-S6)
The Modern Languages Department delivers French, Spanish and German, with a visiting teacher providing Mandarin as an enrichment course for seniors. Pupils can study French, German or Spanish from National 4- Advanced Higher Level. Languages for Life & Work Award & National 4 Mandarin are also possible subject to availability of our visiting Mandarin teacher. Languages develop both academic and vocational skills. The CfE Senior Phase Modern Languages curriculum includes a focus on Employability and the importance of studying Languages on a personal and professional level. At Advanced Higher level, academic research and analytical skills are required and are an excellent foundation for progression to the demands of Further and Higher education. Languages open up an enormous amount of opportunities for future study and employment and are increasingly sought after by universities and employers.
